In June 2000, astronomers made an extraordinary discovery. One that promises to solve one of the biggest problems in cosmology - how and why galaxies are created. Incredibly, the answer involves the most weird, destructive and terrifying objects in the Universe - supermassive black holes. Scientists are beginning to believe that these forces of pure destruction actually help trigger the birth of galaxies and therefore are at the heart of the creation of stars, planets and all life.

Supermassive black holes are so extraordinary that until recently, many people doubted that they existed at all. The idea of giant black holes the size of the Solar System seemed more like science fiction that reality - such monsters would be so powerful that they could destroy the very fabric of the Universe. But in the last five years a series of discoveries has changed our understanding of supermassive black holes and galaxies forever.

Using the powerful Hubble Space Telescope, scientists have been scanning nearby galaxies, searching for these giant black holes. It's a difficult job - by their very nature black holes swallow light - so can never be seen. So what scientists have been looking for is the effect of their massive gravity, hurling stars around them at immense speed. What they've found is more extraordinary than anyone could ever have imagined; not just evidence that these vast destructive monsters exist… but so far they're in every single galaxy toward which they have turned their telescopes. These giant agents of destruction appear to be common throughout the Universe. Scientists now think supermassive black holes are a fundamental part of what a galaxy actually is.

Lurking at the heart of every single galaxy is a giant black hole of apocalyptic proportions - and that includes our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Astronomer Andrea Ghez has been studying the heart of the Milky Way for the last five years. What she\'s discovered is irrefutable evidence for a giant black hole, 3 billion times the size of our own sun. A black hole that could destroy the entire Solar System. And as Horizon was filming in July 2000, Ghez got some terrifying images - of the giant monster sucking up gas and stars at the galaxy heart.

So what is this giant monster doing at the heart of our galaxy? What effect will this giant black hole 25,000 light years away have on us and the rest of the galaxy around it? These are questions that have been puzzling astronomers for the last few years - and in June, two separate groups of scientists found evidence that points to a startling answer. Rather than being destructive parasites, it seems that supermassive black holes may be essential in the very creation of the galaxies they live in.

Exactly how our galaxy was created has mystified astronomers and physicists for years. Although there have been many theories, there's little evidence to explain how the gas in the early Universe condensed to form the galaxy we see today. Now scientists realise they've been missing a vital ingredient - a supermassive black hole. The immense gravity of a giant black hole might trigger the gas to collapse in the first place. By churning up the gas around it, a giant black hole would trigger the birth of stars, planets and life itself. Despite being the most destructive thing in the Universe, scientists now think our supermassive black hole could be crucial in creating the galaxy as we know it.

The supermassive black hole in our own galaxy may be the reason we exist, but recent work suggests it may also be our end. At present Earth is so far away from the black hole that it can't affect us, but physicist John Dubinski thinks all that could change. In January 2000 he graphically simulated the final fate of our galaxy. In 3 billion years we will collide with the next door galaxy, Andromeda. The resulting apocalypse will force the Earth and our Solar System out of orbit. Dubinski has calculated a worrying 50:50 chance that we'll be sent hurtling in towards the black hole at the centre of this maelstrom. This would be fatal for the Earth.

The magnificent ancient city of pyramids at Caral in Peru hit the headlines in 2001. The site is a thousand years older than the earliest known civilisation in the Americas and, at 2,627 BC, is as old as the pyramids of Egypt. Many now believe it is the fabled missing link of archaeology - a ‘mother city’. If so, then these extraordinary findings could finally answer one of the great questions of archaeology: why did humans become civilised?

The mother of all cities

For over a century, archaeologists have been searching for what they call a mother city. Civilisation began in only six areas of the world: Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, China, Peru and Central America. In each of these regions people moved from small family units to build cities of thousands of people. They crossed the historic divide, one of the great moments in human history. Why? To find the answer archaeologists needed to find a mother city - the first stage of city-building.

Civilisation through conflict

They couldn’t find one anywhere. Everywhere this first stage seemed destroyed or built over. And so, instead, scientists developed a number of theories. Some said it was because of the development of trade, others that it was irrigation. Some even today believe it was all because of aliens. Gradually an uneasy consensus emerged. The key force common to all civilisations was warfare.

The theory was that only the fear of war could motivate people to give up the simple life and form complex societies. To prove it, archaeologists still had to find a city from that very first stage of civilisation. If it showed signs of warfare, then the theory had to be true.

When archaeologist Ruth Shady discovered her 5,000 year old city of pyramids in the Peruvian desert, all eyes were on the New World. Ruth\’s extraordinary city, known as Caral, is so much older than anything else in South America that it is a clear candidate to be the mother city. It also is in pristine condition. Nothing has been built on it at all. Instead laid out before the world is an elaborate complex of pyramids, temples, an amphitheatre and ordinary houses.

Make love not war

Crucially, there is not the faintest trace of warfare at Caral; no battlements, no weapons, no mutilated bodies. Instead, Ruth’s findings suggest it was a gentle society, built on commerce and pleasure. In one of the pyramids they uncovered beautiful flutes made from condor and pelican bones. They have also found evidence of a culture that took drugs and perhaps aphrodisiacs. Most stunning of all, they have found the remains of a baby, lovingly wrapped and buried with a precious necklace made of stone beads.

Not quite documentary, not quite drama, this reenactment of a fictional conscript's life building the Great Pyramid of Giza is best described as docudrama. Omar Sharif voices the thoughts of the aged Nakht remembering the moment Egyptian soldiers drafted him into the king's service. The 57-minute film re-creates the boat trip up the Nile and his ascent through the ranks, from delivering water to helping haul 2.5-ton blocks up ramps for the king's tomb. Interspersed are narrator Michael Pennington's historical assertions, along with contrasting footage of what the pyramid looks like today. Pennington's comments are not substantiated during the film, although a list of academic and museum consultants is part of the credits. Almost as interesting as the actual film is the DVD's 14-minute making-of featurette, which explains what shots were real, what were visual effects, and how they used a real Egyptian village to stand in for Giza, now a well-developed suburb.

It is aligned to the four points of the compass to near perfect precision. Inside, intricate networks of passageways lead to three chambers. In one the King will be laid to rest in a vast granite sarcophagus along with unimaginable riches. Here, he will become a medium for all his subjects between heaven and earth, god and man, life and death and all order will depend upon him.

Many engineers believe that even with the help of 21st century technology, they still could not build anything like the Great Pyramid. This accuracy is phenomenal in any epoch, and an almost supernatural feat for the ancient Egyptians.

For 4,500 years, men have reeled before this most extraordinary of all human monuments - and asked how and why it was built.

This includes the two variations of “Extreme Machines” that Clarkson did.

Review from Amazon:
Jeremy Clarkson ventures a little further from the beaten track in this video (a condensed version of the Extreme Machines series) and investigates the Apache gunship, drives jet boats, looks (longingly) at a Swedish Stealth Battleship, rides snowmobiles, has a go at P-51 Mustang racing and gets to fly an F-16. These are toys for very wealthy boys and really show “Mr. forty a day man” that cars are not the final word in transportation as he tries to put on a brave face when dealing with the 4gs of unlimited hydroplanes and goodness-knows how many gs in the F-16. But I suspect it won’t keep him quiet for long. Jeremy shows exotic modes of transport (except for cars) from around the world and even manages to restrain himself from criticising American vehicles. I wonder if this has anything to do with him getting to fly the F-16. A little difficult to obtain - took nearer 4 weeks than the 1-2 weeks originally advertised but this was reflected on my order status when Amazon figured out they couldn’t get it in time. (In fact no high street stores were able to obtain this video for me, even on special order and I have been trying to get it for some time now so all credit to Amazon.) In summary, A very enjoyable hour of video which I will no doubt watch every so often and still find myself chuckling with jealousy. I gotta have a P-51.

The program also highlights BMW's environmental innovation by being the world's first automotive factory to recycle landfill methane gas from rotting trash to power its plant. Methane gas routed from the nearby Palmetto Landfill provides BMW Manufacturing Co. with 63 percent of all its power, reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the upstate of South Carolina by 60,000 tons per year - the equivalent of 4,300 cars driving around the equator every year.

The U.S. plant has 4,500 associates - and almost 500 robots - that produce 600 vehicles a day. From the Body Shop to the Paint Shop and then Assembly, in just under 40 hours a sleek, customized and luxurious BMW Z4 Roadster, replete with the unique double kidney grill and famous white-and-blue roundel logo, is made. The Trump International Hotel and Tower, also known as Trump Tower Chicago and locally as the Trump Tower, is a skyscraper condo-hotel under construction in downtown Chicago, Illinois in the United States. Architect Adrian Smith, who worked for Skidmore, Owings and Merrill during the building's planning and design stages, designed the building, named after real estate developer Donald Trump. Bovis Lend Lease is building the 92-story structure to a height of 1,362 feet (415 m) including its spire, with its roof topping out at 1,170 feet (360 m). It is adjacent to the main branch of the Chicago River with a view of the entry to Lake Michigan beyond a series of bridges that cross the river. The building received publicity when the winner of the first season of The Apprentice, Bill Rancic, chose to manage the construction of the tower.

Trump announced in 2001 that the skyscraper would become the tallest building in the world, but after the September 11, 2001 attacks, the building plans were scaled back, and its design has undergone several revisions. According to the current design, upon completion in 2009 it will be the second-tallest building in the United States after Chicago's Sears Tower, rising above the Empire State Building in New York City and Chicago's current second-tallest, the Aon Center, and third-tallest, the John Hancock Center. It is expected to be surpassed by the Freedom Tower in New York City in 2010 and by the Chicago Spire in 2011. Trump Tower will surpass the Hancock Center as the building with the world's highest residence above the ground until the Spire claims this title.

The design of the building includes, in order from the ground up, retail space, a parking garage, a hotel, and condominiums.The 339-room hotel opened for business with limited accommodations and services on January 30, 2008. April 28, 2008 marked the grand opening with full accommodations and services. A restaurant on the 16th floor opened in early 2008 to favorable reviews for its cuisine, decor, location, architecture, and view.

The Petronas Twin Towers (also known as the Petronas Towers or Twin Towers), in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia were the world's tallest buildings, before being surpassed by the Taipei 101. However, the towers are still the tallest twin buildings and office building in the world. Tower 1 was built by Hazama Corporation [2] and Tower 2 by Samsung Engineering & Construction and Kukdong Engineering & Construction (both of South Korea). They were the world's tallest buildings from 1998 to 2004 if measured from the level of the main entrance to the structural top, the original height reference used by the US-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat from 1969 (three additional height categories were introduced as the tower neared completion in 1996). Caroline Baillie, Deputy Director of the UK Centre for Materials Education, was one of two scientists challenged by the BBC, in this recent four-part series, to re-create a succession of engineering feats from the past.

In each episode of the series Caroline, a materials scientist and Chris Wise, a structural engineer attempted to reconstruct an object that hasn't been built for hundreds of years, if at all. As far as possible they had to use only the knowledge, technology and materials that were available at the time.

The first episode will be shown on BBC2 at 9pm on Friday 29 November when Chris and Caroline are challenged to build a submarine. For one hundred years the submarine has been a vital weapon, but records show that the first one might have been built almost four hundred years ago. According to the history books, a vessel made entirely of wood rowed by twelve men disappeared under the Thames one day in 1621. The crew rowed underwater for seven miles from Westminster to Greenwich. But how did they breathe? How did they navigate? How did they cope with ten tonnes of water trying to crush them?

Chris and Caroline must bring together a team to try and "build the impossible", this seventeenth century submarine. The original inventor, Cornelius Drebbel, was so secretive he left no account, not even a picture. Not surprisingly, having to build something with no knowledge of what it looked like creates an immediate problem for the team, plus they have just a few months to complete the project. The final test is to row it underwater.... but without harming anyone inside.

Caroline Baillie, Deputy Director of the UK Centre for Materials Education, was one of two scientists challenged by the BBC, in this recent four-part series, to re-create a succession of engineering feats from the past.

In each episode of the series Caroline, a materials scientist and Chris Wise, a structural engineer attempted to reconstruct an object that hasn't been built for hundreds of years, if at all. As far as possible they had to use only the knowledge, technology and materials that were available at the time.

In 70AD the Romans laid siege to Jerusalem. The most fearsome weapon in their armoury was a massive torsion spring catapult that towered over eight metres high. It could fire boulders weighing twenty-six kilos that destroyed Jerusalem's walls and was so powerful that only the Roman's Army elite tenth legion had the skill to build it.

Now Chris, Caroline, and a team of engineers and scientists must try to recreate the catapult, the most complex of all Roman war machines. The Romans had over two hundred years experience of building these catapults, so can the team manage to design and build theirs in just four months?

Roman eyewitness accounts tell of how devastating the monster catapult was - and how it could backfire, killing their own men as well as the opposition if even the smallest detail was wrong. Once the team has come up with a design, they have just ten days to build the giant catapult and fire a missileâ€¦ without injuring anyone!

The pioneering days of aviation started in the late eighteenth century when the Montgolfier brothers developed the hot-air balloon and Professor Charles made a balloon powered by gas. Hot on their heels was Lieutenant Jean Baptiste Meusnier who designed an airship. It was to be propelled by human power and was so large and ambitious its only modern day equivalents are the space projects. Unfortunately, Meusnier died before he could actually build it. Had he done so, it would have been the world's first airship.

Now, over two hundred years later, the Building the Impossible team are charged with attempting to build, and test, his magnificent flying machine. Meusnier reckoned it would be able to lift a 20m longboat plus 30 men on-board providing the power. Is the team up to the task of engineering a machine capable of lifting them hundreds of feet in the air - without plunging to the ground? Even if they manage to provide the power to move the airship, the whole project could be scuppered by the notoriously unpredictable British weather.
