The Thirties in Colour - S01E02

NFO:
The Thirties in Colour - Wright Around the World (Ep 2/4)
Wed 23 July 2008 9pm to 10pm BBC4

Four-part series using rare, private and commercial film and photographic archives to give poignant and surprising insights into the 1930s, a decade which erupted into colour as polychromatic photographic technology came of age and three important processes - Dufaycolour, Technicolor and Kodachrome - were brought to the market.

Together with his younger brother Bolling, the American industrialist Harry Wright was wealthy enough to indulge his twin passions for travel and filmmaking. Both siblings collected and shot films that captured the world at a pivotal time in history.

They captured astonishing images acquired and filmed in the islands of the South Pacific, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, as well as South Africa, Morocco, Palestine, and several countries in Europe, including Britain. These destinations were visited during the golden age of ocean travel, when the well-off could escape the Great Depression and travel the world on luxury cruise ships.

The sea had become a playground but it would soon become a battleground, as the world lurched towards the bloodiest war in history.

5/12 - Corfu and Greece

Land ahoy! It's the fifth instalment of this wistful travelogue, and having lurched and wobbled its way past Croatia and Albania, a storm-battered Black Swan prepares to drop anchor off Greece. While the flustered crew flap around the shredded mainsail, the unperturbed Francesco da Mosto embarks on a leisurely stroll around Corfu, its colonial past eliciting some rapturous twaddle about "feeleeng thee muscle of-ah thee Empire". Here, he finds a cemetery for ex-pats, some lovely 19th-century interior design and, on one of the island's numerous cricket grounds, a lengthy misunderstanding involving "that leetle 'ouse". (It's a wicket, Francesco. A wicket.) There's also a visit to a mountain-top monastery and a euphoric encounter with David Bellamy, who shows him a beetle before getting stuck in some mud. Bellissimo! Continues tomorrow.

The Thirties in Colour - Episode 1 - A World Away

NFO:
Following on from The Edwardians and The Twenties in Colour, this four-part series lovingly delves into the archives of amateur film-makers. One of the first to embrace the "amusing hobby" of cinematography was Rosie Newman (see the Inside Story, above), who invested in state-of-the-art Kodacolor film for her trip to India in 1935. What follows is a subjective glimpse into a colonial world on the brink of collapse. Touchingly, Rosie often misinterprets her own footage, little realising that the jolly beach scene she's captured is really a political rally.

On the next step of his sea voyage from Venice to Istanbul, Francesco da Mosto is sailing into the Bay of Kotor where Venetian sailors knew they were leaving safe waters for the dangers of pirates and the ships of rival powers. Francesco's Mediterranean Voyage

Tuesday 15 July

3/12

When TV traveller Michael Palin joins in with some foreign celebration, chatting and perhaps over-indulging in the local brew, it seems a perfectly natural encounter. When Francesco da Mosto does the same - here, for instance, he emerges on deck tousle-haired and blinking after a night drinking too much wine in Hvar - it's cheesier than a ripe gorgonzola. But despite the set pieces, this is an enjoyable journey. Francesco has reached the coastline of Bosnia and Herzegovina, an area that has seen more conflict in recent times than anywhere else in Europe. The news footage from 15 years ago is shocking to see yet, thankfully, despite some very obvious scars of war, Dubrovnik and Mostar are beautiful places once again. Tomorrow he arrives in Montenegro and Albania.

BBC - The Story of India

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us
NFO:
The world's largest democracy and a rising economic giant, India is now as well known across the globe for its mastery of computer technology as it is for its many-armed gods and its famous spiritual traditions. But India is also the world's most ancient surviving civilisation, with unbroken continuity back into prehistory.
Like other great civilisations - Greece or Egypt for example, over the millennia it has enjoyed not just one but several brilliant golden ages in art and culture. Its great thinkers and religious leaders have permanently changed the face of the globe. But while the glories of Rome, Egypt, and Greece, have all been the subject of TV portraits, as yet there has been no television story of India on our screens. This series sets out for the first time to do that: to show a world audience the wonders of India; the incredible richness and diversity of its peoples, cultures and landscapes; and the intense drama of its past, including some of the most momentous, exciting and moving events in world history.
untitled image
In this landmark six-part series for PBS and the BBC, Michael Wood will embark on a dazzling and exciting journey through today's India, 'seeking in the present for clues to her past, and in the past for clues to her future'.

Michael Wood journeys through the subcontinent, tracing the incredible richness and diversity of its peoples, cultures and landscapes. Through ancient manuscripts and oral tales Michael charts the first human migrations out of Africa. He travels from the tropical backwaters of South India through lost ancient cities in Pakistan to the vibrant landscapes of the Ganges plain. In Turkmenistan dramatic archaeological discoveries cast new light on India’s past.

Part 5: The Meeting of Two Oceans
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

The documentary series about the history of India charts the coming of Islam to the subcontinent and one of the greatest ages of world civilisation: the Mughals. Michael Wood visits Sufi shrines in Old Delhi, desert fortresses in Rajasthan and the cities of Lahore and Agra, where he offers a new theory on the design of the Taj Mahal. He also looks at the life of Akbar, a Muslim emperor who decreed that no one religion could hold the ultimate truth, but whose dream of unity ended in civil war.

Francesco's Mediterranean Voyage s01e01

NFO:
Francesco's Mediterranean Voyage

Tuesday 08 July
8:30pm - 9:00pm
BBC2
1/10 - Arrivederci Venezia

Francesco da Mosto's travelogues are real Marmite TV - you love 'em or hate 'em. It's obviously his heavily accented, free-flowing style of Eengleesh and his Italian charm (or smarm?) that divide audiences because the visuals are always stunning. In this series Francesco retraces the great trading route of one of his ancestors from Venice to Istanbul. Along the way he's going to stop off . . . well, almost everywhere. However, it takes a while for him to leave his beloved Venice because, along with snippets of historical information and glorious photography in the first film, we're treated to numerous cheesy set pieces (Francesco searching for his maps, Francesco packing his case, Francesco's family waving a tearful farewell), before his schooner finally glides out of the Venetian lagoon.

War Stories

War Stories
Saturday 5th July, 2008
8:30 - 10:35pm
BBC4

To accompany its short season of classic British war films, BBC4 commissioned this 2 hour documentary examining the history of the war and cinema. In it we uncover forgotten gems like Frieda and revisit classics like Ice Cold in Alex, an exploration into how war films have changed with the times. They were a tool of government propaganda during WW2, and while the blockbusters of the 1950s were part of national nostalgia, today they have been rediscovered and become celebrated icons of British culture.

The Money Programme - The War for Oil (26 March 2003)

NFO:
After World War I, the oil companies carved up Iraq. Shell, BP, Exxon and Total all had stakes in the Iraq Petroleum Company. They paid pennies for each barrel of oil and built a pipeline to take it away.

In 1972 the Iraqis nationalised the industry and threw the foreigners out. From then on Western oil companies could only dream of Iraq’s oil reserves - the second largest in the world.

With Saddam Hussein came decades of war followed by sanctions and Iraq’s massive reserves lay largely untouched. But with Hussein’s regime under threat, at last there was a chance to get back in.

BBC - The Sun

NFO:
This exclusive BBC documentary accompanies the golden ball of fire from it's origin as a cold gas cloud to it's end as a red giant.

Unreachable, unimaginably hot and yet ever present. The sun is the source of all life on earth. It's little wonder many cultures still revere it as a deity. For 4.5 billion years the sun rises every morning on the horizon. But what do we really know about the heavenly ball of fire which provides us with light and warmth? This movie shows with impressive pictures the thrilling story of the creation of the sun, it's influence on our well-being, and how we could use it's power to change the future on earth dramatically.

The sun is the center of our universe and our calendar. The life-giver brightens our sky, provides us with light, warmth and nourishment. Yet the star itself is a very inhospitable place. At a surface temperature of 5.700 degree Celsius we have to be grateful that the sun is 150 million kilometers away from earth. But even at this distance it influences our lives more than we often care to imagine. Even in the age of electrical light the change from day to night remains obvious. But why are we so depressed when the sun doesn't reach us directly once in a while? Physicists have long since proved that depression is more likely to occur in winter than in summer. The culprit is very unlikely the cold of winter but rather the scarce natural light.

The activities of sunspots and cosmic weather often remain hidden to humans. Yet Galileo Galilei already documented the motion of the darker, colder spots on the surface of the sun. But their meaning was only discovered much later. In the middle of the 17th century the surface of the sun entered a phase where it remained completely free of sunspots. This in turn caused the last prolonged cold period in the northern hemisphere: the "miniature ice-age". Temperatures only fell by one to two degrees - but the distribution of polar pack ice obliterated entire viking settlements and caused the population of Iceland to go back by half. Why this was the case hasn't been revealed to the present day.

Though in the meantime another spectacle of the inconceivable solar forces is being observed: eruptions on the surface. Once the magnetic fields of of sunspots explode they fling billions of tons of plasma into space. These mighty gas-fountains often reach earth days later where the magnetic field of the earth blocks them to the greatest possible extent. Observable consequences of the impacts are polar lights, migratory birds which have lost their sense of orientation and stranded whales. Can humans use the unbelievable powers of the sun to avert a energy crisis and global warming?

Did you know...
... every chemical element leaves it's signature in sunlight?

Elements absorb different wavelengths of light which become visible as spectral lines. Separated into it's colors the light reveals the chemical composition of the sun like a bar-code.
