Caroline Baillie, Deputy Director of the UK Centre for Materials Education, was one of two scientists challenged by the BBC, in this recent four-part series, to re-create a succession of engineering feats from the past.
In each episode of the series Caroline, a materials scientist and Chris Wise, a structural engineer attempted to reconstruct an object that hasn't been built for hundreds of years, if at all. As far as possible they had to use only the knowledge, technology and materials that were available at the time.

The first episode will be shown on BBC2 at 9pm on Friday 29 November when Chris and Caroline are challenged to build a submarine. For one hundred years the submarine has been a vital weapon, but records show that the first one might have been built almost four hundred years ago. According to the history books, a vessel made entirely of wood rowed by twelve men disappeared under the Thames one day in 1621. The crew rowed underwater for seven miles from Westminster to Greenwich. But how did they breathe? How did they navigate? How did they cope with ten tonnes of water trying to crush them?
Chris and Caroline must bring together a team to try and "build the impossible", this seventeenth century submarine. The original inventor, Cornelius Drebbel, was so secretive he left no account, not even a picture. Not surprisingly, having to build something with no knowledge of what it looked like creates an immediate problem for the team, plus they have just a few months to complete the project. The final test is to row it underwater.... but without harming anyone inside.

In 70AD the Romans laid siege to Jerusalem. The most fearsome weapon in their armoury was a massive torsion spring catapult that towered over eight metres high. It could fire boulders weighing twenty-six kilos that destroyed Jerusalem's walls and was so powerful that only the Roman's Army elite tenth legion had the skill to build it.
Now Chris, Caroline, and a team of engineers and scientists must try to recreate the catapult, the most complex of all Roman war machines. The Romans had over two hundred years experience of building these catapults, so can the team manage to design and build theirs in just four months?
Roman eyewitness accounts tell of how devastating the monster catapult was - and how it could backfire, killing their own men as well as the opposition if even the smallest detail was wrong. Once the team has come up with a design, they have just ten days to build the giant catapult and fire a missile… without injuring anyone!

BBC Building the Impossible - Part 3 of 4: Prehistoric Park
Description:
Prehistoric Park is a six part television series in documentary style, from Impossible Pictures Limited, each episode is an hour long including commercial breaks.
The programme is narrated by David Jason and presented by Nigel Marven. The fictional component is the theme that Nigel goes back to various geological time periods through a time portal, and brings back live specimens of extinct animals back to the present day, where they are exhibited in a wildlife park named Prehistoric Park, which is a big area between high steep mountains and ocean (which serve to help confine any escapes) with varied environments.

The pioneering days of aviation started in the late eighteenth century when the Montgolfier brothers developed the hot-air balloon and Professor Charles made a balloon powered by gas. Hot on their heels was Lieutenant Jean Baptiste Meusnier who designed an airship. It was to be propelled by human power and was so large and ambitious its only modern day equivalents are the space projects. Unfortunately, Meusnier died before he could actually build it. Had he done so, it would have been the world's first airship.
Now, over two hundred years later, the Building the Impossible team are charged with attempting to build, and test, his magnificent flying machine. Meusnier reckoned it would be able to lift a 20m longboat plus 30 men on-board providing the power. Is the team up to the task of engineering a machine capable of lifting them hundreds of feet in the air - without plunging to the ground? Even if they manage to provide the power to move the airship, the whole project could be scuppered by the notoriously unpredictable British weather.
