I put an 18+ warning in the thread title as it contains a couple of graphic images from the Kama Sutra and covers the topic of prostitution & homosexuality in India and some Islamic countries. At one point here, actor Rupert Everett compares 19th-century adventurer scholar Richard Burton to a Victorian James Bond, but that's only part of the story. As Everett's engaging travelogue-cum-profile roams around India and Egypt, Burton emerges as wonderfully prolific: as well as translating the Kama Sutra, he worked as a spy for the Raj authorities (often at male brothels), spent years getting into character for his famous undercover pilgrimage to Mecca, then pursued a subsequent career as an explorer and diplomat.

Everett confesses to being slightly in love with Burton (which may be why he skips over his married life) and that admiration comes through in the film, which is full of sharp observations and saucy interludes, from a full and frank discussion with hijra transsexuals in Mumbai to a flirtatious encounter with some Goan nuns.

Plus, there's a scene with a Cairo masseur that shines a fascinating light on Muslim attitudes to homosexuality. The film may scandalise some, but it feels like the kind of profile Burton might have enjoyed.
